Frisian whitework comes from Friesland in the Netherlands. Frisian whitework samplers often featured alphabet letters in varying sizes and styles, large and small spot motifs, and designs for bands.
Learn the technique of Frisian whitework with this beautiful sampler at a weekend workshop in Walcha, NSW (Australia), with the Whitework Queen herself, Yvette Stanton.
DATES
Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd March 2026
9:30am to 3:30pm each day
Walcha Sports Club, 13W Hamilton St, Walcha NSW 2354
Take me straight to bookings, please!
What will I learn?
In this class you will learn the basics of Frisian whitework, including stitches such as satin stitch (regular and diagonal), eyelets (single and clustered), whipped backstitch, topwinder stitch and chain stitch. The project is worked in pearl cotton thread on 28 count linen. All levels of proficiency are welcome, but experience with counted thread work is an advantage.
The finished size of the stitching area is approximately 17 x 27cm.
What's included and what isn't?
Included in your enrolment fee are two days of expert tuition (5 hours each day), project supplies, course notes, and morning tea. The venue is comfortable, with no steps to enter.
You will need to bring with you the following:
- 6, 7 or 8 inch embroidery hoop
- embroidery scissors
- notebook and pencil for any notes required, though course notes will be supplies
- we strongly recommend bringing your own magnification and lighting. It is better to have it and not need it, that not have it and need it. Students are not able to gain full value from a class if they can't see properly to do the work, and that's disappointing!
On Saturday night, participants (and any accompanying friends/family) are invited to join Yvette and her husband at the local pub for dinner. This is an optional event and is not included in the enrolment fee.
Your tutor: Yvette Stanton
Yvette Stanton, known as the Whitework Queen, is an independent needlework scholar. She specialises in counted embroidery, particularly whitework, and has written 11 step-by-step embroidery books including "Frisian Whitework: Dutch Embroidery from Friesland". She researched Frisian whitework in the Netherlands, spending time studying examples in museums and private collections. Yvette is left-handed and loves teaching both left- and right-handed students.

Getting there
Drive Walcha is about 5-6 hours north of Sydney and about 6-7 hours south of Brisbane.
Train There is a daily train service from Sydney. When booking your train ticket, ensure your destination is Walcha. This way, the bus will pick you up from the train at Walcha Road (the closest train station) and drive you in to Walcha (about 20 minutes), and vice versa on your return journey.
Fly You can fly to Armidale (closest option) or Tamworth and pick up a hire car to drive to Walcha. If coming from further afield, others have found that flying to Newcastle, hiring a car and driving up through Gloucester can be a good option.
