Mountmellick thread is completely matt, that is, it has no shine at all. It is a finely twisted thread made of soft, unmercerised cotton. It can be used for Mountmellick embroidery (as its name suggests) and other whitework embroidery where a matt finish is desired.
NB: When knitting the fringe, to use four strands of yarn from just two balls, squash the balls, take out the cardboard core, and find the middle ends as well as the outside ends. Use these four ends together to knit with.

Pearl cotton 8 is used for Portuguese Whitework. Not surprisingly, the most common colour is white (blanc)! For those who enjoy a bit of colour also, there are five additional specific DMC colours which can be used - black (DMC 310), red (DMC 321), grey (DMC 415), beige (DMC 644), and blue (DMC 796).
