Yvette Stanton – professional biography

Yvette Stanton is an Australian embroidery historian and author, internationally recognised for her dedication to the documentation and preservation of traditional whitework embroidery techniques from Europe and beyond. Specialising in styles dating from the 1600s onwards, Yvette’s work is grounded in rigorous research, close analysis of historical textiles, and hands-on reconstruction using period-appropriate materials and methods.

With eleven books to her name, Yvette’s publications serve as essential resources for both contemporary stitchers and those interested in the cultural heritage of textile traditions. Her titles combine instructional clarity with rich historical and regional context, making techniques such as Hardanger, Mountmellick, Smøyg, Guimarães embroidery, Punt'e Nù, Merezhka Poltavska and Frisian whitework accessible to a global audience.

Yvette’s work bridges the divide between academic-level research and practical embroidery education. Her commitment to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage through documentation and dissemination has earned recognition among museums, educators, and craftspeople alike. She has studied historical pieces in museum collections across Europe and has developed detailed reconstructions that both preserve and revive lost or endangered knowledge.

An experienced educator, Yvette has lectured at embroidery guilds and textile events, where she shares insights into the technical construction, cultural significance, and visual language of traditional embroidery styles. Her teaching and writing are underpinned by a philosophy of respectful engagement with cultural traditions and a belief in the importance of making knowledge accessible and enduring.

Through her books, research, and public engagement, Yvette Stanton plays a vital role in ensuring that historical embroidery practices are not only remembered but revived, understood, and enjoyed by new generations of stitchers and scholars around the world.
