The Mountmellick pomegranate doily features a pomegranate fruit and leaves. The seeds inside the pomegranate are often depicted in Mountmellick embroidery with a couched lattice, as they are here. The scalloped buttonhole edge is typical of historical Mountmellick embroidery, and provides a beautiful frame to the embroidery.
Having seen pomegranates in art and tapestries over the years, particularly in the work of William Morris, I always wondered what they were like. I was amazed to find them growing in a simple garden nearby my house, and over the months of the year, I enjoyed watching them flower and then grow into small then large fruit, which slowly ripened and withered on the bush. It was wonderful to watch the cycle. It would have been nice to taste the fruit too, but it was not my garden!
