The Mountmellick dogrose and shamrock doily features a central dogrose flower with a small sprig of dogrose leaves, and scattered shamrocks.
The rose is the symbol of England, and the shamrock is the symbol of Ireland. Historical Mountmellick embroideries often featured combinations of dogroses, shamrocks and thistles (Scotland) signifying the close ties between the countries.
The shape of this doily is based on an old piece of Mountmellick that I saw in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin, when I visited there in 2002 to research Mountmellick embroidery.
